Tattered Floral Challenge

Have you heard about Tim's Tattered Floral Challenge?

Here's the throw down...
"Create your own layered creation using the tattered floral die made from any kind of papers, materials, you name it.  Use any kind of inks, sprays, paints, stamps, or stencils.  It can be any kind of project from a card, wearable, or mixed media…but it must use the tattered floral die.
You have until Friday MARCH 22nd to upload your project to the (tim's) blog and share it with the world!
On Saturday MARCH 23rd we will pick 5 winners who will EACH receive a $100 Tim Holtz prize bag filled with an assortment of creative goodness!"

I can't pass up joining in on the challenge!
I decided to make stamps using a foam sheet, Wonder Tape Sheet and the Tattered Floral Die.
I cut the black foam and the Wonder Tape sheet the same size as the Bigz die.  Then just peeled the red protective coating off the Wonder Tape Sheet...
...and stuck it to the foam.  Easy enough.
I ran the foam piece through my Vagabond machine to cut the flowers.
 They just popped right out.
Then, I peeled off the protective coating on the Wonder Tape and stuck the flower to a piece of plastic packaging.  Seriously, how many times has the saved plastic packaging helped me in a pinch?
I repeated the same steps for each flower.
Now I need something to stamp on.
I cut a piece of heavy chipboard (I think I got it at Paper Source years ago) to 8 x 10".  I figured that was a good size and since I have no expectations for this project I thought it would do nicely.
I wrapped the board with Sticky Back Canvas.  (again, easy)
Then painted the canvas with Gesso to get it ready for paint and set it aside to dry.
After the canvas was completely dry I decided on a background color, Distress Paint - Antique Linen.  I opened the cap and painted it on with a paint brush.
After drying the Antique linen with my Heat it tool, I pounced Frayed Burlap on the corners (one at a time).
Drug out the paint with my brush...
into a fan shape.  I did mist a bit of water onto the Distress Paint which helps move the paint around quite nicely.
Then, I pounced the area with a crumbled up paper towel.
 Here is the finished canvas.
Alright, now it's got to have a message.
I cut a sheet of turquoise Core'dinations Kraft core cardstock (say that three times fast) using the new Block Talk alpha.  This alpha just came out at CHA.  Nice big 1 1/2" letters.
On a side note:  I could have made an entire foam stamp alphabet using the same method as the flowers.  Just remember, when you put the foam onto the die, the foam must be facing you (Wonder Tape touching the die pad).  This way the letters and numbers will come out the right direction for stamping.

I sanded the letters to reveal the kraft color underneath...love that.
I tested the letters on the canvas so I would know where to stamp my flowers but I did not glue them down.
That was a mistake.
I should have just glued them to the canvas as I had them just where I wanted them.
But I'm not going to dwell on it, just learn from my mistakes.
Moving on...(I swear I'm over it)
layer 1: I used Picked Raspberry for the largest flower.  Super easy with the dabber top.
I started stamping the first layer.
Once I was done stamping all the pink flowers, I washed the stamp.  Super easy, just spray with water and dab off on a paper towel.

layer 2: Mustard seed, Spiced Marmalade and a bit of Picked Raspberry.
Looking good...letters still not glued down but they are helping me "see" where to stamp.
Layer 3: Salty Ocean and Mustard seed.
Well, I stamped the two top flowers with the Mustard seed added and didn't really like it.  The rest I stamped with the straight blue.
I also found that the blue was a little more opaque than I wanted so I just misted a bit of water over the blue and sponged up the paint with a paper towel.
Remember Distress Paint is only reactive with water when it is wet.  Once dry, it is permanent.  So if you let the Distress Paint dry between the layers (or dry with a Heat it tool), if you make a stamping mistake, you can quickly wash it away with water and it will not effect the bottom layers.
layer 4 - Mustard Seed
(so this is where I forgot to take a picture.  Please pretend you see the canvas with a bunch of these yellow flowers...my, isn't it pretty?  that paula, she's a genius)
layer 5: leaves
I knew the canvas needed green leaves to bring it all together, however I don't have a Bigz die that has small leaves.  What I do have is a flower that looks like it's made from leaves.  So I cut another flower just as before, but this time I cut it up to make leaves.  I cut some so they would have a stem and some that do not, as I was not sure which I wanted to use.  I put each of them on small pieces of plastic and now I'm ready to stamp.
Flower vs Leaves
Mowed Lawn is the color of choice.
And here it is stamped (now you can see the yellow flowers too).
So the flowers need a center.  I was going to do the whole pencil eraser trick but then I thought that was too big so I punched dots using both hole sizes of the Cropadile tool.  Onto the plastic they go.
A little Black Soot Distress Paint and you have a simple flower center.
I did use the "old pencil eraser to make a dot" thing to add blue centers to the yellow flowers.
So not too bad and so far it has been super simple.  I could stop here and add my saying but this is suppose to be a challenge so I better keep going...
This is what one Shapie pen and 30 minutes can do.
Seriously, just follow the lines.
Remember, it doesn't have to be perfect...and much better if it's not.
Now the saying...
And some Remnant Rub words that make it mean a little more.  Really, could the Remnant Rub words go any better with Shine Brightly?
I have a yellow frame in the kids room that has changing artwork.  I thought it was a good place for this piece today, till someone else's drawing of a space ship or a castle takes it's place.  Then it might land on an easel on the desk or hanging in the hallway.  We shall see.
Oh, and I almost forgot, I put a little secret message in the corner.
I'm giving away a Tattered Floral die to one lucky winner (courtesy of mr holtz).  So, if don't have the Tattered Floral die and would like to win one, leave a comment on this post.  Comments will be open till Sunday at midnight and I will post the winner on Monday.
Remember to post your Tattered Floral creation to Tim's blog for a chance to win the big prize at the end of the month.
Good Luck everyone!

Cheers for a great week!
