I admire this piece and those rich pages from Dapper. I wouldn't have thought to place pieces along the top edge--they are perfect there and add a lot of interest to the piece. Just a smattering of faded, broken lines to the left of the text (ala postmark) might satisfy your desire for balance? Even a glaze of a light or dark color wash in that area might do the trick.
